The Coal Creek Community Theater
in association with Broomfield Civic Orchestra presents
Trial By Jury/Cox and Box
Book by W.S. Gilbert & F.C. Burnand
Music & Lyrics by Sir Arthur Sullivan
Directed by by Rick Hays
Two short comic operettas, one evening. In the first, a jilted bride sues her ex-fiancé for breach of promise while the judge and jury fall hopelessly in love with her. In the second, two men discover they've been renting the same room - one works days, one works nights - and that they're both engaged to the same woman neither one wants. Victorian absurdity at its finest, with Sullivan's music holding the whole ridiculous enterprise together.
Run Time - 1 hours and 15 minutes with one 10-minute intermission
Trial By Jury by Sir Arthur Sullivan
A courtroom in London. Angelina is suing Edwin for breach of promise. He jilted her, and she wants damages. The judge admits he rose to power by marrying a rich attorney's ugly daughter and then throwing her over once he'd made his fortune. The jury swears to be impartial, then falls instantly in love with the plaintiff. Edwin offers to marry both women. The judge has a better idea. He'll marry Angelina himself.
Cox and Box by Sir Arthur Sullivan
A London boarding house. Sergeant Bouncer has a scheme going. He rents the same room to two men - Cox the hatter, who works days, and Box the printer, who works nights. They've been sharing a bed for months without knowing it. When Cox gets an unexpected day off, the two finally meet, and discover they have more in common than lodgings. They're both engaged to the same woman. Neither one wants her. What follows is a desperate contest to stick the other man with the bride, complicated considerably by news of a fortune and a drowning that may or may not have occurred.
