Coal Creek Community Theater presents

The Nerd

by Larry Shue
Directed by Dan Schock

Willum Cubbert owes his life to Rick Steadman, a fellow soldier who carried him to safety in Vietnam. They've never actually met, but Willum has promised to do anything for the man who saved him. So when Rick shows up at his thirty-fourth birthday party, Willum is thrilled. For about five minutes. Because Rick is a catastrophically annoying houseguest with no social skills, no self-awareness, and no intention of leaving. One of the most reliably hilarious comedies in the American repertoire, with a twist ending that lands like a gift.

Run Time - 2 hours and 15 minutes with one 10-minute intermission

Cast

  • Rachel Cohen-Birzer is thrilled to be stage managing at Coal Creek Community Theater once again. Previously Rachel has stage managed I Hate Hamlet, On Borrowed Time, Shakespeare Incorporated, and The Last Night of Ballyhoo. Rachel has also performed as Hannah in Beau Jest and just finished playing Nell Clipper in Way Out West in a Dress at Theater Company of Lafayette. Rachel would like to thank her husband Ash for being super supportive.

  • Primarily an actress and director for many Denver area theaters, Nita recently performed the role of Raynelle in Dearly Departed with Spotlight Theater Company. Directing for CCCT includes I Hate Hamlet, Lend Me A Tenor and The Front Range Playwrights Showcase. In her spare time she enjoys looking for and/or making props. Some of her most challenging have been making a garotte that spurts blood for Death Trap (Miner's Alley Playhouse) and a Victorian silver beaver inkwell for Six Degrees of Separation (Vintage Theater).

  • CCCT audiences have seen Steve mostly on stage (most recently as Robert in Proof or manning the box office, but he actually got his start in community theater almost 30 years ago as a "techie", not an actor. His first sound design was for the musical Two by Two, where he provided the Voice of God. Last season Steve won a Louie Award for his sound design of Proof (yep, he pulled double duty in that show), and figured that since he was on a roll, he would give this show a shot. Listen for his handiwork particularly in the scenes involving the answering machine.
